Bikers 'could benefit from better road maintenance coordination'

People travelling on roads across the UK stand to benefit from the greater coordination of maintenance work on highways, an automotive body has stated.

Courier Exchange has reported that the Freight Transport Association (FTA) commented that officials need to make sure that the funds set aside to fix highways problems are used to do so and not siphoned off elsewhere.

This follows a report from the Asphalt Industry Alliance which found that there are currently more than 3.5 million potholes on roads in the UK.

Each one could pose a significant threat to people travelling on the roads, as they could cause an accident and see motorists invalidate their car or bike insurance policies.

"The government must increase the funding provided to local authorities in order that they are able to maintain their roads in a fit and proper condition," remarked the FTA's head of urban access policy, Stephen Kelly.

Meanwhile, a report in the Lincolnshire Echo has revealed that £4 million more is to be spent by officials in the area in order to see potholes eliminated from the region's roads.
