Police launch motorcycling crackdown

Police in Lincolnshire have launched a new crackdown on speeding motorcyclists in the county that will see officers target busy dates in the motorcyclist's calendar.

Lincolnshire Police will be providing safety advice to motorcyclists and cracking down on offenders on weekends when large numbers of motorbikes will be on the roads.

Specific dates in the biking calendar that are being targeted include the August bank holiday when the British Superbike Championship takes place at Cadwell Park and the MCN Butlins and BMF Peterborough events.

Busy dates in the motorcyclist's calendar tend to witness a rise in fatal and serious collisions involving bikes and Operation Stealth is intended to improve safety on Lincolnshire roads.

Operation Evidens, which will also take place during the biking season, will see officers in Lincolnshire enforce speed limits on local roads and a BikeSafe scheme is being run to boost motorcyclists' skills.

A total of 21 motorcyclists and pillion passengers were killed in accidents in Lincolnshire last year, accounting for 27 per cent of all road casualties in the county for the year. However, motorcyclists make up just two per cent of road users.

Bike insurance customers are being advised to adopt a responsible attitude to speed and other road users when travelling to events taking place between now and October, when the 2008 biking season comes to an end.
