Motorists to become environmentally-friendly 'if price is right'

People travelling on UK roads would do so in a more environmentally-friendly way if it meant they could save money, new research has found.

According to a What Car? study, 47 per cent of people would choose a vehicle which is more ecologically sound so long as it had a financial benefit.

Motorists have been feeling the pinch recently with the increasing cost of petrol and greater charges brought in by Alistair Darling as part of his first Budget last month.

Similarly, London mayor Ken Livingstone last month revealed that the cost of travelling through the centre of the city in a high-emissions vehicle was to go up at the end of October.

"With the cost of living increasing and with wages failing to keep up, car buyers are saying financial pressures are of more concern than helping the environment," said group editor of What Car? Steve Fowler.

Environmental issues have been a fixture in the media over the last two years.

Last summer, former US vice-president Al Gore staged the Live Earth concerts, designed to raise awareness of clime change.
