'Roads could be safer with technological advancements'

Advances in modern technology employed in automobiles could help make highways safer for all road users, an automobile manufacturer believes.

Research from Volvo Trucks has found that motorists could be safer in vehicles which have a great understanding of their behaviour, as well as integrated driver communication and user-friendly instrument panels.

The Swedish firm presented its research to a group of around 200 researchers from across Europe on April 15th and 16th and it may be that its introduction has an effect on the cost of car and bike insurance policies should it reduce accidents.

Volvo Trucks safety director Lars-Goran Loweradler commented that road collisions could be cut with such advances.

"If we can provide technology that adapts support systems to suit the individual driver and the current traffic situation, many accidents would be able to be avoided," he said.

Meanwhile, Volvo Trucks has launched a new audio system which it believes offers capabilities usually found in some of the most exclusive models on the market.

The Volvo Audio System has advanced mp3, iPod and wireless Bluetooth capabilities, according to the company.
