Motorists 'can receive ban after two strikes'

Drivers on UK roads face a ban if they are found over the legal drink-driving limit twice, according to new plans from the government.

Officials state that the limit at which a motorist can pick up a conviction is to be lowered to a single pint of beer or glass of wine.

This could have an effect on the cost of car and bike insurance for drivers, as cover companies could choose to increase costs if the number of convictions increases as a result.

But the changes would be a positive step, according to head of campaigns for road safety charity Brake, Cathy Keeler.

She said: "We will save the most lives by reducing the limit and keeping the automatic ban. We must not distort the simple message that being caught over the limit results in disqualification."

This comes as statistics published in the Guardian have outlined the number of police officers who have been caught drink-driving in the last six years.

According to the national newspaper, 170 officials have been convicted of the crime during the period and still serve.
