North-east rogue drivers 'have options'

Drivers who are found breaking the law in the north-east have been given a choice as to how they are punished, a local news source has reported.

The Darlington and Stockton Times has stated that this is part of the multi-agency Operation Siren initiative, which has been orchestrated in order to reduce deaths in the area.

Motorists are given two options once they are caught by officials - a fixed penalty notice of £60 or the opportunity to attend a presentation on the risks of dangerous driving.

It may be that motorcycle riders who opt to pick up the fine have difficulty picking up a cheap motorbike insurance policy in the future, as some cover firms could judge them to be a road risk.

Chief superintendent Sue Cross said: "I would strongly urge motorists to drive carefully and within the law. It doesn't matter if you are late, your phone-call can wait and remember, that bald tyre you keep ignoring could cost you your life."

Statistics from the Department for Transport show that there were 3,150 deaths on roads in the UK recorded over 2006.
