Mobile phone road threat outlined by MP

Motorists in Lancashire could soon find themselves being pulled over and tested for drugs under new police plans to assess suspected of breaking the law, it has been reported.

The Lancashire Evening Post has stated that officials in the region are being told to ask drivers to stand on one leg in an effort to check their sobriety.

People who fail the test could find that they risk their bike insurance policies, as it may be that cover companies decide to offer more expensive deals to those who have a history of poor road behaviour.

According to Lancashire Police deputy road policing coordinator Ian Ashton, narcotics can have a serious effect on motorists.

He said: "Drug consumption can substantially degrade a person's ability to divide attention."

Indeed, statistics published by road safety charity Brake show that 18 per cent of people who are killed in traffic collisions across the UK have traces of drugs in their system at the time of death.

The organisation added that cannabis is the most common narcotic among motorists involved in fatal accidents.
