Older drivers 'safer than the young'

Older drivers have been found to be less of a threat on the road as was first thought, it has been reported.

According to Motors Today, statistics from the Institute of Advanced Motoring Trust (IAM) reveal that only six per cent of people involved in crashes every year are over the age of 70.

The figures run contrary to the school of thought that older drivers are less safe on the road.

Indeed, it may be that cover firms offer cheaper car or bike insurance policies to drivers above a certain age as a result.

Neil Greig, IAM director, commented that the research explodes the "myth" regarding older motorists.

He said: "Older drivers have a wealth of motoring experience and knowledge and the vast majority self-regulate the extent of driving in relation to their ability."

Meanwhile, statistics released by the Department for Transport show that there has been a fall in the number of road deaths recorded in the UK.

In 2007, 3,150 people were killed, compared to 2006 when 3,201 died on highways.
