Drivers in Merseyside caught in mobile crackdown

Motorists in Merseyside were caught out by officials in the area for breaking the law by using their mobile phones behind the wheel, it has been reported.

The Liverpool Daily Post has stated that some 8,800 people were found to be in violation of the law in such a manner during 2006.

Using a handheld device while driving could prove to be a distraction for motorists, as they could lose concentration and career into other road users - a potential problem for those with a motorbike insurance policy.

Indeed, Department for Transport legislation introduced in 2007 means that those caught breaking the law in such a manner can pick up a £60 fine and three points on their driving licence.

"By alerting motorists to the dangers of driving while using a mobile phone, we hope to show the motoring public our commitment in enforcement of road traffic offences," chief inspector Chris Markey commented.

This comes as figures from the Department for Transport show that there were 3,150 people killed on roads in the UK over the course of 2006.
