Uninsured drivers 'pass 40,000 on north-east roads'

More than 40,000 people are taking to roads in the north-east despite the fact that they do not have a car or motorbike insurance policy, police in the region have claimed.

Figures collated by Northumbria Police show that some 3,198 collisions were recorded in the area involving people without polices over the course of 2007.

In addition, the body stated that one in five motorists does not have provision and that the number of people driving without a cover deal is four times more than the amount found in 2004.

Martin Cull, speaking on behalf of the Motor Insurers' Bureau, remarked that an insurance policy should not be overlooked because of cost.

He said: "Some of them say their car isn't worth very much, so there's no point in insuring it...But insurance is not about value, it's about the risk of injury to yourself and others."

This comes as the Darlington and Stockton Times has reported on Operation Siren.

According to the news source, officials in the area are giving drivers caught out the option of attending a road safety presentation rather than pick up a fixed penalty notice.
