East Sussex bikers 'brushing up on skills'

Voluntary organisation East Sussex Advanced Motorcyclists (ESAM) is looking to improve motorcycling safety in the local region.

Staffed by trained volunteers, the body is looking to improve bikers' riding skills, as according to bexhillobserver.net a motorcyclist involved in a road accident is nearly 40 times more likely than other motorists to be killed or seriously wounded.

ESAM's Paula Goldsmith told the website: "Motorcyclists are extremely vulnerable road users and we at ESAM are trying to attract as many as possible for advanced training in the hope of reducing road casualties and fatalities."

East Sussex is a popular motorcycling location, and bikers convene in Hastings each May in their thousands.

Ms Goldsmith adds: "Advanced riding is not about slowing you down on the road. It's about helping you to become better at predicting hazards, more adept at observing other road users and road signs and making your riding smoother, more controlled and ultimately safer."

Motorcycle enthusiasts should ensure they have the right insurance, while also staying visible and wearing the necessary protective clothing.
