Official calls for more 20mph zones

A great number of 20mph zones are needed in the UK if road deaths are going to be reduced, according to a senior road official.

Road safety minister Jim Fitzpatrick commented to Times Online that the government would like to see more areas installed, with fatality figures falling to around 2,000 per year by 2020.

Current statistics from the Department for Transport show that there were 3,150 deaths recorded on roads in the UK over the course of 2006.

It may be that a road accident has a serious effect on a bike insurance policy, with riders having to make a claim, while a speeding conviction can also see costs increase.

This is because some cover firms may view those with a conviction as more of a danger on the roads and put up prices.

"We could reduce crashes still further, with the help of more 20mph zones, especially in residential neighbourhoods and other areas where there are vulnerable road users," said Mr Fitzpatrick.

Jim Fitzpatrick hails from Glasgow in Scotland and was first elected to the House of Commons at the 1997 general election.
