Manchester bikers protest rising fuel prices

More than 500 bikers took to the streets of Manchester to protest the soaring costs of fuel.

The slow-go demonstration brought traffic to a halt on the M62 and M60, yet the convoy received cheers and applause from other drivers on the road, according to the Times.

Manchester's protest was one of several sparking up around the country as a result of prime minister Gordon Brown's plans for a 2p increase in fuel duty later this year.

Motorcycle insurance customers and other road users across the country have hit out at the rising cost of driving.

Starting out at 08:00 BST just outside the city, the bikers headed for Salford Quays and caused lengthy delays that were exacerbated by the Highways Agency's attempts to put up roadblocks to stop them.

One of the organisers of the event, known only as Maverick, commented: "We've decided that we can make a change and that we're going to do something about it."

"We're going to be that voice that stands up and fights back. We'll make a difference," he said.

At one point during the protest, the bikers turned off their engines for ten minutes as the police tried to block their entrance into the city, reported the Manchester Evening News.
