Bikers opt for 'practical' vehicles

Although sales of new motorcycles fell by 13.2 per cent in May as a result of the worsening economy, tighter finances could persuade more people to turn to two-wheeled vehicles in the future, it has been suggested.

In total, 13,907 new motorbikes were registered in May, down from 16,000 in the same month last year, according to the Motor Cycle Industry Association (MCIA).

However, the outlook for the year so far remains strong, with 58,348 bikes, scooters and mopeds having been registered in the first five months of the year, just 2.6 per cent down from 2007.

Despite the fall, which is in line with a general reduction in consumer spending, the MCIA said that more people were viewing bikes as a low-cost, practical alternative to using cars or public transport.

"A bike will easily beat congestion, is easy to park and will save time and money," said Craig Carey-Clinch, of the association. "By emphasizing the advantages of powered two wheelers, economic uncertainty should give the motorcycle industry an opportunity to get more people onto two wheels."

The MCIA recently warned that new scooter and motorcycle licence legislation is coming into effect this October, which will mean people have to wait longer and perform more tasks to pass the second part of their test.
