People looking to pick up a secondhand vehicle should be sure it is in good condition before purchasing, it has been reported.

An investigation from Hertfordshire Trading Standards saw eight vehicles bought, with five of them discovered to be unroadworthy, the Borehamwood and Elstree Times has stated.

It could be that people are attracted to secondhand automobiles due to their cheaper cost.

However, if the vehicle is not fit for the road, motorists could end up paying out more for repairs and motorcycle insurance policies should they get involved in an accident.

According to Richard Smith, local county councillor, young people could be particularly at risk of making such a mistake.

"Consumers should buy from legitimate businesses that inspect the vehicles before putting them on sale. If we can prevent just one accident by urging drivers to get cars checked before they buy, it will have been worth it," Mr Smith remarked.

This comes as research from Sainsbury's Finance has suggested a downturn in the used car market, according to Motors Today.

Fewer people expected to pick up second-hand models between March and August 2008 than in the six months previous, the news source added.
