Motorcycle deaths 'fell slightly in 2007'

The number of motorcycle deaths reported on roads in the UK fell over the course of 2007, new statistics have shown.

Figures from the Department for Transport (DfT) show that there were 588 people killed in such accidents during the year - down two per cent on the year before.

In total, the statistics show that there were 2,943 deaths on all modes of road transport in 2007, which is down seven per cent of the 3,150 fatalities recorded over the course of 2006.

The figure is also down on the 3,201 people the DfT reported were killed during 2005.

But Kevin Clinton, head of road safety at Rospa, remarked that while deaths fell, the number of serious injuries recorded among riders went up.

He said: "Motorcyclist deaths fell slightly, [but] the number seriously injured rose. We still need to see improvements in motorcycle training and riders need to develop skills and experience if they are riding more powerful machines."

Mr Clinton went on to suggest that motorists could benefit from extra driver training in order to "iron out bad habits".
