'Bikers want bus lane access'
Motorcyclists have called for better access to bus lanes in response to continuing fears over biker safety on urban roads.
A total of 130 members of the Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM) came out overwhelmingly in favour of allowing bikers to use the lanes. Of those surveyed, over 90 per cent agreed it would improve safety on the roads. The 130 surveyed individuals represent 19,000 IAM members.
Dave Shenton, IAM motorcycling manager and conference chairman, said: "We would like to see more of an open minded approach towards allowing motorcycles to use bus lanes more widely. It makes little sense for motorcyclists to filter within inches of stationary vehicles when an empty piece of tarmac, only a few feet away, leaves them more visible, separated from cars and causing less anxiety to everyone."
A pilot scheme carried out by the mayor's office six years ago found issues with cyclists and pedestrians, but the plan is still considered best to combat the high number of motorcycle accidents in the capital, and could have an implication on motorbike insurance.
Bus lanes sometimes prove controversial in themselves, as a current East Lancashire proposal is priced at £20 million. Critics oppose their dominance of the road, but they are also seen as a good way to facilitate public transport.
