New vehicles 'emitted less CO2 over second quarter'

There was a smaller amount of CO2 emitted by new vehicles bought in the UK over the second quarter of 2008 than in the same period of 2007, according to new statistics.

Figures posted by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders and cited by environmental driving group Clean Green Cars show that 3.64 per cent fewer emissions were released during the time frame compared to the second quarter of 2007.

It added that there was a similar drop in emissions recorded over the first six months of this year - 3.18 per cent - against figures from a year earlier.

Motorists who pick up environmentally-friendly vehicles could find that they gain cheaper bike insurance policies as a result.

Speaking on behalf of Clean Green Cars, Jay Nagley remarked that the drop is due more to financial factors than eco-conscious ones.

"Fuel costs, not environmental concerns, have done more to accelerate the shift to fuel efficient cars than any other initiative ... Saving money still trumps saving the planet when it comes to buying a new car," he said.

At this week's G8 summit, world leaders discussed the use of electric cars.
