Fraudulent claims used to cover driver debt
People in the UK whose debts are out of control may be making fraudulent insurance claims to bail them out, according to a national cover body.
Statistics released by the Association of British Insurers (ABI) show that there has been a 70 per cent increase in the number of false cases submitted by the public over the last three years.
The organisation commented that one man resulted to pushing his car off a cliff in order to claim a payout which he could then use to cover the cost of his hire purchase.
It may be that being caught out for such a crime results in higher van, car or motorcycle insurance policies in the future, as cover companies simply may not trust customers.
Director of general insurance and health at the ABI Nick Starling remarked that insurance fraud is not a victimless crime.
He said: "Honest motorists pay through higher insurance premiums - an extra £40 a year on average."
Vision Express research at this year's Royal Highland Show found that one in four drivers has difficulty reading a number plate from 20.5 metres.
