Dangerous drivers to face more jail time
The Sentencing Guidelines Council has stated that motorists who cause death by dangerous driving should face tougher sentences.
It concluded that death caused by careless driving with aggravating circumstances should lead to a a jail sentence of at least three years, reports the Telegraph.
For cases that involve persistent or deliberate bad driving, or where the driver in question is under the influence of drugs or alcohol, the council recommended longer jail time.
It also stipulated that motorists who were guilty of "momentary inattention" should be spared custodial sentences.
A spokesman for the Ministry of Justice said: "Ensuring drivers who cause death on our roads through bad driving are suitably punished is essential if justice is to be done and people maintain their support for the criminal justice system."
He added that the new guidelines were welcomed by the government and that justice ministers wanted to see the introduction of two new offences: causing death by careless driving and causing death by driving while disqualified, uninsured or without a license.
Figures from the Motor Insurers Bureau reveal that drivers who take to the roads without bike insurance or car insurance cost law-abiding citizens over £500 million each year.
