Council fights to save bike training centre
Powys county council has announced that it intends to fight plans by the Driving Standards Agency (DSA) to close the only motorbike training centre in Mid Wales.
Mark Kerr, the chief executive of the council, stated that talks with the DSA revealed that it did not intend to keep the facility open because it was not financially viable, reports the Shropshire Star. Members of the council voted to invest £50,000 to turn the facility into a multi-purpose test centre.
Mr Kerr said that he hoped that the Welsh assembly government would provide the remaining £250,000 required for the development. He commented: "The motorcycle training centre in the Llandrindod Wells area supports more than 20 jobs and is home to the national Harley Davidson Academy for motorcycling." Mr Kerr added that the centre took in around £400,000 and provided approximately 2,000 days of motorcycle training each year.
Bikers who have recently got their licenses should ensure they have motorcycle insurance before they take to the road. The Wrexham Leader recently reported that an ex-police advanced driver has become the first instructor in the UK to complete training allowing him to offer the DSA's Enhanced Rider Training Scheme.
