Couple to ride across the US and South America
A Scottish couple plan to ride across the Americas as part of a fundraising effort for SCIAF and the Yorkhill Sick Kids' Hospital in Glasgow. Audrey and Stephen Martin will start their journey in Alaska and travel through the US then right down to the southern-most tip of South America, reports the Daily Record. It is thought that their expedition, which begins in October, will take around three months to complete.
The pair intends to make a brief stop off at a special needs facility in Nicaragua where occupational therapist Ms Martin will share her skills and knowledge with resident healthcare workers. She commented: "It's the trip of a lifetime and we want to do something to help two charities which are such good causes and help so many people."
Once the journey is completed the couple will have travelled 18,000 miles on their Yamaha motorbike. Motorcycle enthusiasts thinking of undertaking a cross-country trek of this sort should ensure that they take out suitable motorcycle insurance.
In related news, novice biker Lou Hartley recently set out on a 10,000-mile journey across Europe on a Yamaha MT-03 to raise £40,000 for a number of cancer charities.
