Government publishes plans for motorcycle safety

The Department for Transport (DfT) has revealed its latest set of initiatives to reduce the numbers of motorbike-related deaths on UK roads.

It is hoped that the plans will help to protect motorcyclists, who make up one per cent of traffic but 20 per cent of deaths on the road. The Motorcycling Strategy Action Plan, developed with the National Motorcycle Council, includes investigating ways to report diesel spills and other defects on roads. In addition to this it will look into new technologies that may increase the safety of bikers.

Jim Fitzpatrick, road safety minister, commented: "The new action plan sets out how we will work to improve the safety of motorcyclists, and make sure that we continue to address their concerns and fully consider their needs when making decisions." He added that the government also plans to build on existing work to identify the practicality of a motorcycle safety assessment programme.

In related news, recent figures published by the DfT found that over half of all motorbikes travel faster than the 30 mph speed limit in built-up areas, with half of these going more than five mph over. Bikers riding in this way may find their motorcycle insurance premiums rise if they are caught and get points on their licence.
