West Mercia Police have revealed that the number of motorcyclists involved in serious accidents in the area is rising.
Figures compiled by the force show that ten riders were killed between April 1st and July 13th, up from six in the corresponding period last year.
In a bid to improve the area's road safety record, officers have been despatched to patrol routes that are popular with bikers.
Superintendent Matt Mead explained that rural roads in Shropshire, Herefordshire and Worcestershire attract lots of leisure riders keen to test the performance of their powerful machines.
Most of these motorcyclists use the roads in a considerate and safe manner, but in order to encourage the minority of bad riders to improve, helicopters and video-equipped vehicles will be sent out to monitor the routes.
"[We] will be targeting the minority of riders who are a danger on the roads and who risk their lives, and the lives of others, by riding at excessive speeds and indulging in risky and dangerous manoeuvres," said Supt Mead.
He added that these riders give all bikers a bad name.
Anyone caught offending by the patrols is likely to face a fine or points on their licence, which may affect the size of their motorcycle insurance premium.
