Motorcyclists in Wales are being given the opportunity to learn how to ride more safely and avoid accidents as part of a new initiative being run by local police.

North Wales Police Driving School is providing training courses this month to "meet the needs of individual students".

Those completing the course run by Driving Standards Agency-registered instructors may find they are eligible for a discount of up to 17 per cent on their motorbike insurance.

"Statistics show that motorcyclists are amongst the most vulnerable of road users and the course is designed to enhance riding skills, thereby reducing the risks associated with motorcycling," the organisers of the course said.

Those interested in developing their skills can enroll on the courses, which are being offered either on a one-to-one basis or in groups, running between August 18th-22nd and 26th-29th.

In related news, councillors are fighting to save Mid Wales's only motorcycling test centre, which the Driving Standards Agency plans to close, the Shropshire Star reports.

Mark Kerr, council chief executive of Powys county council, told the newspaper that he hoped the Welsh assembly would provide financial assistance to replace the old centre with a new facility.
