Calls made for new motorcycle test to be deferred

The RMI Motorcycle Rider Training Association (MRTA) has called for the new motorcycle test to be deferred until next year due to planning problems.

Motorcycle insurance customers awaiting the new test, which is due to be implemented in September, may find there are no available test slots as test centres struggle to be ready in time.

According to MRTA, the Driving Standards Agency has planned for a minimum of 66 new Multi Purpose Test Centres to be ready by September 29th, yet only 38 will be up and running by then.

Kevin Bryan, chairman of the organisation, said the planning problems are likely to affect all current trainees and anyone planning to take their tests in the near future.

"MRTA supports the new test but DSA must call a stop to the September implementation for at least six months or until such time as the network is fully ready to avoid chaos in the training industry and unacceptable extra training costs to new riders," he stated.

The MRTA has written to the transport minister to call for the test to be delayed, bike insurance customers may be interested to know.

Bookings for the new test, which costs £80, have been taken by trainers since August 4th.
