DSA launches new advanced rider certificate

Motorcyclists in the UK could soon qualify for a discount on their motorbike insurance following the launch of a new advanced rider certificate.

The Enhanced Rider Scheme is being launched by the Driving Standards Agency (DSA) in partnership with the Motorcycle Industry Association.

It is intended to help meet the government's targets for improving road safety and reducing the number of accidents involving motorbike riders on the UK's roads.

Riders must meet a required standard in order to receive the DSA Certificate of Competence - Enhanced Rider Bonus, while those with "weaknesses" can receive tuition from a new network of instructors set up by the body.

Having achieved this standard, riders may then be eligible for a discount from their bike insurance providers, the scheme's organisers said.

Meanwhile, the new motorbike test is due to come into effect next month and will feature higher speed exercises and other elements tested on off-road sites.

However, the Motorcycle Rider Training Association warned this week that the facilities needed for the new test were not fully prepared.

The organisation called for the introduction of the new test to be postponed for six months to allow for the network of centres to be ready.
