Motorbike insurance customers are being advised to check the state of their tyres before embarking on journeys during the upcoming bank holiday.

TyreSafe is urging riders to check the air pressure of their tyres against the manufacturer's manual, to ensure their wheels are free of stones and are correctly balanced, and to make sure the tread depth meets legal requirements.

Rob Beddis, chairman of TyreSafe, said generally motorcyclists are "much more aware" of correct tyre pressures than other road users.

"However, for many, this bank holiday weekend may be the last time this year that they will venture out on their bike," Mr Beddis commented.

To ensure they enjoy a "safe weekend's riding", riders ought to follow the company's advice, he added.

Meanwhile, Protyre reports just 34 per cent of motorists always check their tyres before setting off, meaning many could be putting themselves at risk.

Phil Brookes, operations director at Protyre, said the findings showed many road users are "oblivious to the safety implications" of not keeping their tyres in good condition.

Drivers should spend time ensuring their vehicles are correctly maintained before they take to the road this bank holiday, he added.
