Police crack-down on mini motorbikes

Children without motorbike insurance or licences who ride mini motorbikes are being targeted by police in Harborough, Leicestershire.

Residents in the area have complained about several under-age riders using the bikes in town parks, the Harborough Mail reports.

Police community initiatives co-ordinator Henry Whatley said such vehicles are "packaged as if they are toys" but can achieve speeds of up to 40mph.

Children have been reported riding the bikes along pavements and in parks without wearing helmets, he explained.

PC Steve Winn from Harborough police, said parents ought to be aware that mini motorbikes require tax and motorcycle insurance.

Neither should they be "ridden by children in parks, on pavements or without helmets", PC Winn stated.

"These are not toys which kids can just play with unsupervised," he added.

Earlier this month, the Lincolnshire Echo reported that a 22-year-old man pleaded guilty to causing the death of his stepdaughter following an accident involving a mini motorbike.

Lincoln crown court heard how Georg Franklin had ridden across a pavement with three-year-old Abbie Perrin with him.

A car pulled out from an access road on to the path and as Franklin swerved to avoid it, Abbie fell into the road and later died from her injuries.
