BMF challenges show cancellations

A number of motorcycle cancellations, which motorcycle insurance customers may have been set to attend, are being challenged by the British Motorcyclists Federation (BMF).

Several events, including the Driffield Bike day, the Welsh National Motorcycle Show and the Great Yorkshire Bike Show, have come under pressure from police pressure to cancel, the BMF claimed.

In response to this, it has written to home secretary Jacqui Smith, welsh secretary Paul Murphy and the president of the Association of Chief Police Officers Ken Jones to object to the situation.

Anna Zee, chair of the BMF, said it was "extraordinary" that the authorities assume such events attract trouble.

The events that have been cancelled have not been associated with problems, Ms Zee explained.

"With so many cancellations, and the reasons for them being shrouded in mystery, we feel that motorcyclists are suffering completely unjustified discrimination," she stated.

The BMF is now seeking to meet with the Home Office to discuss the issue.

Representing 92,000 members, the BMF is the UK's largest riders rights groups and aims to "protect the interests of the road rider".

The organisation was first established in 1960.
