Motorcycle industry confronts government about test
Representatives from the motorcycle industry have met with a senior government official to discuss the problems facing the UK's testing system.
The Motor Cycle Industry Association (MCI), Motorcycle Rider Training Association and Riders Edge discussed the issue with transport minister Jim Fitzpatrick, bike insurance customers may be interested to learn.
At present, only 39 test centres are expected to be ready to offer the new test when it comes into effect on September 29th.
Calling for a delay to the introduction of the new test regime, the group raised concern over the risk novice riders will face if they have to travel long distances just to take the test.
Craig Carey-Clinch of the MCI said the meeting had been "productive".
"The discussion with Mr Fitzpatrick and the DSA [Driving Standards Agency] was frank and constructive, and we must now hope for a swift decision to delay the new test procedure until more test centres are available," he remarked.
Mr Carey-Clinch said the industry was in favour of the new test, as it ought to develop safer riders, but argued that the new testing system is "likely to crash and administrative chaos will ensue".
The DSA is offering a number of open days throughout September to help trainers to prepare for the new test.
