Electric bikes on the way

Motorbike insurance customers seeking to reduce the costs of taking to the road may be interested to learn that two of Japan's largest manufacturers are set to launch electric bikes.

According to the Nikkei business daily, both Honda and Yamaha are planning to launch electric motorbikes over the next few years, Reuters reports.

Yamaha announced it is aiming to launch electric bikes, capable of travelling 100 km on only a single charge, by 2010, while Honda is set to launch motorcycles powered by lithium-ion batteries in 2011, the news provider noted.

However, both companies have yet to offer details of prices or the specifications of the vehicles, although it is thought Honda is aiming to convince the likes of the Japan Post Service to switch to electric motorbikes.

Yamaha announced that its news flagship VMAX motorcycle is to be on display this weekend at Ace Cafe, Brighton Burn-up.

The 200hp VMAX was unveiled at the NEC last year, according to Simon Belton from Yamaha Motor UK.

"The Ace Café reflects the same core elements of excitement and individualism which lies at the heart of the new VMAX and the Brighton Burn-up is the perfect event to show it off," he remarked.
