Police crack down on moto menace

Police in Bristol are to take to two wheels to tackle the problem of people using motorbikes illegally.

Officers in north Bristol have been given a motorbike by a local building firm to help in its efforts to address anti-social riders.

Neighbourhood Sergeant Beatrice Hayes from Southmead police station said local residents had raised concern about people riding mopeds and min-motos illegally and in a "disruptive manner".

She commented: "Residents asked us to tackle the problem and we decided the best way to keep track of these offenders was by motorbike; you can't get to some places by car and you can't always keep up by foot!"

With the bike, officers will be able to seize more illegal bikes and take them off the area's roads, which ought to help reduce anti-social behavior, she added.

The Peterborough Evening Telegraph reports that a man who rode a mini moto without motorbike insurance along a high street at night has been fined by Peterborough magistrates' court.

According to the newspaper, Tom Holloway, 20, pleaded guilty to riding the bike on the road and for not having any insurance.

He was ordered to pay £20 and given six points on his licence - which may impact upon his future motorbike insurance premiums.
