77-year-old gets on his bike

A 77-year-old former British sidecar champion may need to renew his bike insurance when he takes to the road to take part in this year's Bridgewater Motor Club grasstrack meeting next weekend.

Gerald Wheeler won the British Sidecar Championship in 1970 and is now planning to have a few trial runs before possibly taking part in the event at Crossmoor Farm Spaxton on Sunday, the Bridgewater Mercury reports.

Mr Wheeler is expected to ride a motorbike that dates back to before 1975 at the meeting, which will include both a solo rider and sidecar event, according to the newspaper.

The winner of the sidecar race will be presented with the Den Carter Trophy, which was named in honour of the man who ran the motor club's events for a quarter of a century.

In related news, the Cornishman reports that 1,400 riders took part in an event in memory of Isle of Man racer Martin Jennings.

According to the newspaper, the event also provides an opportunity for riders to pay tribute to all those killed in motorbike accidents over the course of the last year.

It is thought the ride helped to raise £1,000 for the Front Line Emergency Equipment Trust.
