West Yorkshire police are offering to boost people's registration plate security as part of their Screw It or Lose It initiative.

Launched by the force in partnership with the local Neighbourhood Watch Association, the scheme is offering road users the opportunity to have their number plates fitted with tamper-proof screws.

Steve Blakeley, neighbourhood watch liaison officer for Dewsbury, said the theft of registration plates is a "problem" as thieves use them to hide the identity of other vehicles.

"Vehicles caught on camera using stolen plates, whether it is for speeding, or in the case of London, the congestion charge, cannot be traced back to the driver and they can then avoid any punishment or charge," he explained.

The initiative is aimed at raising awareness of the crime, as well as preventing further thefts, Mr Blakeley added.

People interested in securing their number plates can head down to Sainsbury's in Dewsbury on Wednesday October 1st between 10:00 BST and 16:00 BST to participate in the scheme.

In related news, motorbike insurance customers may be interested to learn that a motorbike was recently stolen from a member of the Whitworth Warriors bike club in Lancashire ahead of a charity fundraising ride across the country.

Councillor David Bradbury, who was involved in the event, told the Lancashire Telegraph that he thought the bike would have been "stolen to order".
