Motorbike Insurance

A man from Plaistow, in Newham, has been fined several hundred pounds for riding a motorbike in a public park.

John Ward, of Newport Avenue, was fined £80 by Stratford magistrates' court and ordered to pay £200 costs for breaking the Parks and Open Spaces Byelaws by riding through Canning Town Recreation Ground.

The rider now faces higher motorbike insurance premiums after he was also given six points on his licence for being uninsured at the time.

Newham councillor June Leitch said Mr Ward's behaviour was "totally unacceptable and completely irresponsible".

"Parks and green spaces are enjoyed by families, many with very young children and it would be absolutely appalling if these motorcyclists were to cause an accident," Ms Leitch commented.

"We will not hesitate to prosecute anyone who flouts the law," she added.

Earlier this month, Graeme Trudgill, technical and corporate affairs executive at the British Insurance Brokers' Association, warned that the "net is tightening" on those who choose to take to the roads without any form of motor insurance.

Mr Trudgill stated that laws are in place and the authorities will catch those who break them.
