Police aim to boost motorbike safety

Motorbike insurance customers may be among those stopped as part of a new campaign to boost road safety launched by Nottingham police.

Officers from the force are aiming to reduce the number of biker casualties by providing safety advice and free reflective tabards to riders.

The constabulary launched Operation Retina earlier this year in response to a rise in the number of fatal road traffic incidents involving motorcyclists.

Since March, over 1,000 riders have been stopped and had their bikes, licence and motorbike insurance checked by police and, while these checks will continue, the campaign will now focus on safety.

Inspector Ben Crane, from Nottinghamshire Police's Road Policing Unit, said: "Motorcycle fatalities accounted for more than 33 per cent of all the deaths on Nottinghamshire's roads last year, despite motorcyclists only making up two per cent of the driving public."

Riders can boost their safety by ensuring they are more visible to other road users by making use of the free tabards being offered, he added.

The Motor Cycle Industry Association recently reported that registrations of powered two-wheelers rose by 22 per cent in July, yet the number fell by 12.3 per cent in August when compared with the corresponding month in 2007.
