Biker raffles bike off for charity

A biker from the north-east of England has raised thousands of pounds for charity by raffling off a motorcycle.

Lawrence Laidlow, of Boldon Colliery, sold 27,000 raffle tickets to people seeking to win a Harley Davidson, the Sunderland Echo reports.

With each ticket sold for £1, Mr Laidlow was able to buy the bike and raise £11,777 for cancer charity Clic Sargent.

One lucky rider, Graham Leek, of Ipswich, may be getting quotes for bike insurance after winning the Harley Davidson when his ticket was drawn at a special event held at the Gala Casino in Sunderland.

Nicola Doran, community fundraising manager for the charity, said the organisation welcomes all donations and without those like Mr Laidlow it "would not be able to continue supporting the ten families that every day in the UK are told the devastating news that their child has cancer".

Clic Sargent is currently the only charitable organisation offering "all-round care and support" for children diagnosed with cancer and their families.

The organisation provides specialist medical staff during treatment, support in hospitals and at home and assistance to both survivors and those coping with loss.
