Motorbike industry remains 'resilient'

The motorcycle industry continues to be resilient in the face of current economic turmoil, according to a new report.

New figures from the Motor Cycle Industry Association (MCI) showed that sales of motorcycles fell by 9.7 per cent in September, bike insurance customers may be interested to learn.

However, the market for powered two-wheelers (PTWs) was down by just two per cent to the end of September, compared with the car market which has experienced a 7.5 per cent decline.

In total, 16,431 PTWs were sold last month, below the 18,204 recorded during the corresponding month in 2007.

Commenting on the state of the market, Craig Carey-Clinch, from the MCI, said: "Given the all-pervading gloom and daily doses of bad economic news, a drop this year of only two per cent not only shows the resilience of motorcycle manufacturers and dealers, but also reflects that people are looking to save money and time by using PTWs."

Some categories within the PTW market continue to demonstrate "strong performance", the expert added.

A recent report by the RAC found that the cost of motoring is leading to many people choosing to switch their cars for other modes of transport.

The organisation found that 22 per cent of motorists it surveyed are considering choosing a smaller car or bike.
