New bike test 'only when facilities ready'
The motorcycle driving test should not be introduced until the infrastructure is in place to handle any changes, according to the RMI Motorcycle Rider Training Association (MRTA).
Motorcycle insurance customers may remember that the new test was due to come into effect on September 29th, but safety concerns led to its postponement.
At the time, just 38 test centres would have been in operation meaning there were "major gaps" in the infrastructure, the organisation stated.
Kevin Bryan, MRTA chairman, said postponing the new test was the "only option" given the circumstances.
"The training industry was effectively brought to its knees by recent events and has suffered significantly due to inadequate test capacity and booking issues," Mr Bryan remarked.
Any further changes to the testing regime ought to be trialled before being introduced, he commented.
Mr Bryan said the next few months are "crucial" and the MRTA would continue to work with the Driving Standards Agency (DSA) to identify the location of new facilities.
Until the introduction of the new test regime on March 29th next year, those learning to ride motorcycles will be required to take the existing test, the DSA has stated.
