New motorbike test 'progresses'

Progress is being made on the new motorbike test, according to the Motor Cycle Industry Association (MCI).

It recently persuaded ministers to put back the start date of the new test to March 2009, but says the number of new multipurpose test centres will not reach the planned 66 even by then.

The MCI is working with the Driving Standards Agency (DSA) to ensure adequate preparations in place, those looking to do the test and take out motorbike insurance on their new vehicle might be pleased to hear.

A number of proposals are being considered by the DSA to ensure national coverage for motorbike tests is maintained and trainers are being consulted.

Craig Carey Clinch of the MCI says there is still a possibility that the arrangements will be in place by next March.

"In any case, the new test itself is something that has been broadly welcomed by the industry as a contribution to road safety.

"The urgent task for DSA is to ensure that it can be properly delivered and MCI is supporting this endeavour."

However, he also warns that if coverage is not in place by March, jobs and livelihoods could be at risk.

Earlier this week the MCI launched a new initiative to bring together the motorcycle training sector.

It will focus more effectively on improving road safety, which could mean fewer accidents and therefore fewer motorbike insurance claims.
