Motorbike torched in park

A motorbike in Haywards Heath has been destroyed after it was set on fire in a local park.

In news that will alert riders to the importance of holding an up to date bike insurance policy, firefighters were called in to deal with the blaze in Victoria Park that left the bike in tatters, reports the Mid Sussex Times.

The bike, along with a nearby rubbish bin, was set alight by vandals, and a crew from Haywards Heath eventually extinguished the fire at around 02.15 BST on Monday, October 13th.

Carole Preston, the clerk to the town council, lives in Drummond Close, where the incident occurred.

She said she heard "a lot of rowdy shouting in the park", at which point her son opened the window to ask the group to be quiet but "got a mouthful of abuse".

Of further alarm for motorcycle insurance customers and providers in the region is the news that this is not the first crime of its nature.

"It's the second time in as many months that a motorbike has been set alight," said Mrs Preston. "The other one was in the plantation area of the park and there was nothing left of it apart from charred metal."

A similar incident was also reported last month in the Newcastle Journal, when 2,000 homes in parts of Northumberland were left without electricity after a motorcycle next to an electricity pole had been torched.
