Police in Gateshead are warning riders to make sure they are covered by their bike insurance after a series of recent thefts in the area.

The rise was noticed by Neighbourhood Policing Team officers across the area, and Inner West Neighbourhood Sergeant Alan Parks reassured bike riders that the team were "making enquiries".

"While we are making every effort to find the stolen property and stop these thefts, we are appealing to motorbike owners to take extra precautions when leaving their bikes unattended," he said.

As well as making sure they have an up-to-date, valid motorbike insurance policy, police are also advising riders to fit good quality disc locks and alarms to their bikes and to store them in a secure and alarmed garage or outbuilding.

In addition, owners should mark their bikes with one of the various solutions available on the market that are only visible under UV light, in order to make it easier to recover the bike and return it to its owner if it is stolen.

The advice follows one recent incident, reported by the Northampton Chronicle and Echo, in which a witness filmed two teenagers outside a shop allegedly trying to steal a parked Suzuki bike.
