The number of moped riders in south Derbyshire taking out motorcycle insurance is likely to rise after police announced their intention to target 'nuisance riders' in the area.

Neighbours have issued several complaints about the noise of the vehicles in the area, according to the Burton Mail, prompting police to step up their efforts to deal with the problem.

Sergeant Mike Sisman, a member of a designated panel to address neighbours' concerns, said that police were now assigning "target days" on which they were using police motorcyclists to issue warnings to riders and seize the vehicles of those who continued to ride with no bike insurance.

Police were making it a priority to deal with the problem, he added, and would be deploying resources to carry out further spot checks in the area in future.

The news follows a similar crackdown in Kettering, where the Northants Evening Telegraph reports that police issued warnings to 20 young riders in the area and also seized and crushed one motorbike.

Sergeant Paul Wade, who led the operation by the Kettering South West Safer Community Team, was pleased with its success.

"Last month we didn't have any reports of motorcycle nuisance which is very encouraging," he said. "We were getting between three and five reports a week before."
