Honda launches safety innovation

Riders could help cut their motorcycle insurance premiums with the use of ground-breaking new technology developed by Honda to improve safety on UK roads.

The new "Vehicle to Vehicle Communication" system, demonstrated for the first time yesterday, is designed to aid safety and inform drivers of what is going on around them.

And Steve Martindale, general manager of Honda (UK) Motorcycles, said the development represented could lead to "a new era of road safety" for all road users.

The system uses wireless LAN technology to allow vehicles on the road to share information with others, whilst also tracking surrounding road users' position, speed, distance and direction.

Drivers and motorcyclists can then receive the data - including information on upcoming accidents, traffic congestion, or hazards - with motorbike riders picking it up via an in-helmet audio system and visual display.

The system is part of Honda's continuous attempts to increase safety and reduce insurance claims for motorcyclists on UK roads, and Mr Martindale is optimistic that the idea will take off.

"Honda is proud to lead the way in the field of motorcycle safety and there's no doubt that this is an area where other motorcycle manufacturers are increasing their focus as well," he said.

The development comes after the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA) called for the government to change timekeeping in the UK in an attempt to cut the increase in accidents that occurs after the clocks have gone back.
