"Safety first" approach for Yorkshire motorcyclists
Riders in Yorkshire are being urged by police to take extra care on the roads ahead of the dark evenings and winter weather.
With motorists preparing to turn back their clocks this weekend, the darker evenings and wet and windy conditions could result in increased injuries for riders and additional claims on their motorbike insurance.
North Yorkshire Police Chief Superintendent Alison Higgins, who is leading the continued road safety campaign in the area, warned that motorcyclists were "extremely vulnerable" to the worsening conditions.
"All it takes is for one tyre to lose grip on a damp patch of road or a painted road marking and the consequences could be severe," she said.
The caution follows a string of serious and fatal accidents in the area involving those on two wheels, and Chief Superintendent Higgins advised that bikers should make sure they maintain concentration, reduce speeds and watch their braking distances when they are out on the road this winter.
According to the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA), motorists and bikers should have their vehicle fully serviced ahead of the winter months and pay attention to short-term weather forecasts before they venture out onto the roads.
