MCI backs European safety campaign

Motorcycle insurance customers are to be reminded of the everyday risks involved in riding powered two wheelers (PTWs) in a new 13-month campaign.

The movement will use a cartoon format to raise awareness of the potential risks encountered in certain road and traffic situations, and has been backed by the Motor Cycle Industry Association (MCI).

One cartoon will be released each month covering a new risk area, giving riders tips on how to approach situations such as roadside hazards, dangerous road surfaces, diesel and liquid spills, and damaged and badly repaired surfaces.

The MCI's Craig Carey-Clinch welcomed the European-wide campaign, and urged riders to take on board the information.

"We also hope that road engineers, planners and policy makers will take note, and make better provision for the increasing numbers of PTW riders in the future," he added.

According to Motorcycle Accidents In-Depth Study, accidents caused by "road infrastructure" account for almost ten per cent of total accidents, with PTW riders struggling to cope with the poor condition of many European roads.

The new awareness campaign follows after Derbyshire Police announced a safety training day to be held in the area this Wednesday aimed at helping young bikers avoid the dangers involved in riding mopeds and motorcycles.
