Police warning to antisocial bikers
A police motorbike unit has moved to successfully cut antisocial behaviour among motorcyclists on a Darlington estate.
Five bike insurance customers were issued with warning notices as police tackled nuisance riders on the area's Skerne Park estate, with the threat of having their machines seized if they are caught riding in an antisocial way again.
The number of incidents was also reduced in light of the increased police presence, with just two occurrences reported over the two-day crackdown.
Officers had received 50 complaints over the previous month, and Councillor Bill Dixon, Darlington Council's cabinet member for Neighbourhood Services and Community Safety, said the operation had "obviously had an impact".
"We know that when these bikes are ridden badly they are at least antisocial, and at worst deadly. We need to make sure this type of behaviour stops for everyone's benefit," he added.
Earlier this month, Lancashire Police seized and crushed three mini-motos after complaints were received from residents about youngsters riding the vehicles antisocially in a neighbourhood in Hyndburn.
Police Constable Andrew Sarchet told the Lancashire Telegraph that those who ride motorcycles ought to do so in a "responsible manner and ensure that the relevant documentation is held".
