Tragic death highlights danger for overseas bikers

Motorcycle insurance customers have been given a tragic reminder of the perils of overseas driving after the death of a Cleethorpes rider in Germany.

Peter England was killed in a head-on collision with a car earlier this summer and an inquest heard that he had been driving on the wrong side of the road when the accident happened.

According to the Grimsby Telegraph, the 49-year-old was holidaying with a group of motorbike enthusiasts in the south of Germany and had decided to go out for a ride on his own when the accident happened.

Recording a verdict of accidental death, coroner Paul Kelly said he could only assume that the rider had "had a momentary lapse of concentration" and forgotten which side of the road he should have been on.

Mark Lilliman, a fellow bike enthusiast and close friend of Mr England's, suggested that his friend's death provided a warning to bike insurance customers across the country.

"When it's so close to home it makes you aware of the hazards of the hobby," he said.

A new safety campaign was launched last month to help improve safety for riders taking to the roads across Europe, with a series of cartoon reminders being released each month giving riders tips on dealing with potential hazards.
