Parents warned to 'think twice' over mini motorbikes

Parents in Haverhill are being urged to think twice before buying mini motorbikes for their children this Christmas.

Police have received several complaints about the illegal use of the vehicles, and warned that bikes are likely to be seized and crushed if riders do not obey the law, the Haverhill Echo reports.

Sergeant Sarah Bartley, of the region's Safer Neighbourhood Team, said she was "particularly concerned" by the increasingly young age of children using mini motorbikes without supervision.

And she urged that parents should think twice about buying the machines as Christmas presents for youngsters, "unless they are going to take their children to a track where they can ride safely and legally".

Officers plan to visit schools as part of plans to highlight the dangers of riding the machines and warn children of the consequences of doing so illegally.

Parents are reminded that mini motorbikes are not exempt from the same regulations as other road vehicles, meaning full motorbike insurance and correct legal documents are required to ride them.

Police in Lancashire seized and crushed three of the mini motorbikes last month after neighbours complained about them being ridden illegally on public land, according to the Lancashire Telegraph.
